Sustainable Synergy: Laitex’s solutions at Carbo Culture’s Biochar plant

Innovative technologies are stepping up in the fight against climate change. They work to cut greenhouse gas emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Carbo Culture, a pioneering company at the forefront of this movement, is spearheading the charge with its revolutionary Carbolysis™ technology. Laitex played a key role in this project. It supplied the important pellet feed and biochar cooling system for Carbo Culture’s ambitious initiative.

Laitex Solutions at Carbo Culture’s Biochar plant

The Pellet Feed and Biochar Cooling System provided by Laitex for Carbo Culture’s Carbolysis™ project play a crucial role in the conversion of waste biomass into stable biochar while also generating renewable energy.

Pellet Feed System:

The pellet feed system is responsible for delivering the raw material, which consists of wood pellets from a manufacturer nearby, to the Carbolysis™ reactor. This part of the process ensures a continuous and controlled supply of raw material to the reactor.

Biochar Cooling System:

Cooling of biochar is critical after finishing the carbonizing process. That is because of the self-ignition of biochar at a certain temperature when exposed to air. Safe and reliable cooling of biochar is done with Laitex cooling screw conveyors in this project.

Biochar, the central product of Carbo Culture’s Carbolysis™ process, operates by leveraging the carbon-storing capacity of plants. Trees and crops naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow, incorporating it into their biomass. When these plants decompose or are burned, the stored carbon is released back into the environment. However, by subjecting biomass to high temperatures and transforming it into biochar, Carbo Culture prevents the release of this carbon, effectively locking it away  and removing it for good.

Carbo Culture’s facility R3

Carbo Culture’s facility R3 relies on wood pellets derived from a manufacturer nearby as its raw material. What sets Carbo Culture apart is its commitment to using raw materials that cannot be repurposed for primary uses like construction. This emphasis on sustainable sourcing ensures that only materials with minimal alternative value are utilized, further reducing environmental impact.

The raw material for R3 is transported from a location just 10 kilometers away, maintaining a localized supply chain. This not only reduces transportation-related emissions but also supports the principle of sustainability by minimizing the environmental footprint of the entire process.

Diverse Applications of Biochar

Biochar has multifaceted applications, making it a valuable asset in the fight against climate change. Apart from sequestering carbon, Carbo Culture’s BCR biochar will be used to grow food in greenhouses and after that as a soil improver in open-field agriculture.

Furthermore, the Carbo Culture process doesn’t stop at biochar production. Approximately 50% of the carbon originally present in the biomass is captured, with the remaining 50% released as gases. These gases are efficiently harnessed for district heating, providing a renewable energy source and reducing the carbon footprint of energy generation.
